INDEPENDENCE DAY activities were marred by the shooting death of a St Philip man earlier today.

Dwayne Burgess, of Marley Vale, died after he was wounded several times in a shooting incident at Ruby Main Road, in the same parish.

Burgess, said to be in his 30s, died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital tonight.

Initial reports indicate he was the peacemaker in a fight between two men.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. and police said it did not take place in the midst of the St Philip Carnival which was winding down. (AC)
