Countdown to 50

THE SYMBOL IN THE centre of the National Flag began its trek across the island on Independence Day as Barbadians gear up for celebration to mark 50 years of Independence.

A commemorative Broken Trident sporting the number 50 in the centre, specially crafted for next year’s big occasion by Donna Redman of Acute Vision and donated by Williams Industries Ltd, was officially handed over by Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave to Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme members Rico Wiggins, Kemar Smith and Antonio Greenidge at the Independence Day Parade on Monday at the Garrison Savannah.

The Broken Trident, symbolising the end of the 49th anniversary and the start of the 50th, will be carried around the island, starting from yesterday, by a wide cross section of people, under the theme Our Pride.

It will be there at Community Independence Celebrations and will be used to support the secretariat’s parish month activities.

On November 30, it will end its journey at the Garrison Savannah, where it will become part of the 50th Anniversary Of Independence Monument.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones said many children would be involved in the activities.

“I am working on a small committee of student leaders to help us refine some of the ideas and insert one or two other ideas into how young people, students from sixth form right down to first form, can become involved and feel that nostalgia of celebration,” he said. (HLE/BGIS)
