Deal with what you can, teachers

IGNORE THE CACOPHONY of voices which would blame the schools for the ills of society and deal with the issues over which you have control.

This was the advice given to graduating teachers at the Erdiston Teachers’ Training College graduation ceremony at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Saturday night.

In a wide ranging and detailed report on the 2014-2015 academic year, principal Barbara Parris told the scores of primary and secondary school teachers that their challenges were not only internal but came from external sources as well.

“There is a cacophony of voices which seem to suggest that the school is responsible for just about everything that goes wrong in a student’s life,” she said, adding she was referring to the academic performance of the island’s students. (HLE)
