‘Solution’ to sargassum

A FRENCH COMPANY thinks it has the answer to Barbados’ Sargassum seaweed problem.

Mother Nature appears to have given the island a temporary reprieve from the invasive algae, but representatives of CDO Innov are visiting Barbados later this week to discuss their “seaweed collecting solutions” with officials, including Coastal Zone Management Unit personnel.

And while the National Conservation Commission recently acquired a Cherrington 5500 mechanical beach cleaner, which officials said could remove several tonnes of seaweed and other debris from the seashore daily, CDO Innov sales representative Matthieu Blit told the DAILY NATION his company had equipment that would snare the seaweed  while it was in the water.

Blit also said his organisation, which specialised in “sensitive areas management”, had solutions that were “one of the few taking into account the valorisation potentialities”, meaning maximising the monetary value of the material. (SC)
