Cell tax ‘bad for small business’

SMALL BUSINESSES could be hit hardest when the 4.5 per cent VAT increase on mobile call time is introduced in January.

This was the view expressed by heads of two local organisations.

Chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA), Alex McDonald told the SUNDAY SUN the 22 per cent tax on Flow and Digicel mobile services could have a “knock-on effect” that burdens small business persons whose bills already “run several hundreds of dollars”.

“Either they’ll absorb [the cost] which probably will be very hard in this environment or they will pass it on to their customers which means that again, the cost of doing business is going up,” he said.
