THERE ARE EIGHT suspected cases of the new mosquito-borne Zika virus in Barbados.
These statistics were revealed by Minister of Health John Boyce at a press conference at the Ministry of Health yesterday.
The minister, who said officials were keeping a close eye on the virus that was first reported in the region last June, noted samples from those eight suspected local cases were now with the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).
He said the results of those tests would be made public as soon as they were received. The Zika virus was spread by the same Aedes Aegypti mosquito thath was responsible for dengue fever and Chikungunya.
And since the vector [the mosquito] was already in Barbados, “there is potential for transmission”.
