GOVERNMENT will be seeking a partnership with corporate Barbados to assist in the maintenance of a number of its sporting facilities that fall under the auspices of the National Sports Council (NSC).

Minister of Sports Stephen Lashley gave word of this on Tuesday at the end of a fact-finding tour of eight venues in Christ Church, St Michael and St James, where deteriorating hard courts and playing fields with overgrown grass were highlighted in articles in the SUNDAY SUN over the past two weeks.

“We are also going to be partnering with some corporate entities where we are going to get them to work with us to provide the financing to take care of some of our facilities in terms of the upgrades in exchange for branding and so on. That is something that we are going to pursue relentlessly, and I believe that will augur well for maintaining our facilities,” Lashley said.

He acknowledged that the NSC was facing a mammoth task, with 106 playing fields across Barbados and over 70 hard courts to be maintained, but said the council and Government would ensure that corrective action was undertaken.
