Bajan surfers look to 2020

LOCAL SURFERS are eyeing the possibility of competing at the Olympic Games in 2020.

Barbados Surfing Association treasurer, Louis Venezia, speaking at the 2015 Surfer of the Year awards ceremony at Blakey’s Bar and Restaurant on Saturday evening, revealed it was almost certain that the sport would be added to the list of Olympic sports and the association had already been putting plans in place.

“It is more than 99 per cent sure that surfing will be added to the Olympics and what an honour it would be to represent Barbados at the Olympic level,” he said.

“We are going to be starting programmes to develop surfing and surfers for that series.”

Venezia said that last year’s surfing season was a great success but it was mostly supported by the Over-16 division. (RG)
