A BAPTIST PREACHER is calling on all church leaders to band together and block any attempt to introduce same-sex marriages in Barbados.

The rallying call by Reverend Vincent Wood, Pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, came yesterday in reaction to a plea by a same-sex couple to local authorities to allow gays to be married.

Barbadian Cheryl McIntosh, 55, and her St Lucia-born partner Maurica Charles, 49, grabbed the Front Page headlines in the February 6 edition of the SATURDAY SUN with their recent union in Philadelphia. McIntosh said she wanted Barbados to open up and “let gay people get married if they wish”, adding that there were a lot of gays in the island.

But Wood, who touched on the issue during the morning service, said that Christian leaders needed to stand firm in their belief and never accept gay marriages. (AC)
