SOUTH AFRICAN FILMMAKERS, the Monarchy Group, are set to employ about 20 to 60 Barbadians when they film their new movie Umthetho Ngumthetho: The Law is the Law.
Co-founder of the group Ernest Nkosi said the jobs will be both onscreen and behind the scenes.
The movie will be filmed in both Barbados and South Africa and Nkosi said it has received the stamp of approval from soca veteran Alison Hinds.
In a recent interview held at Nation House, the trio of Nkosi, producer Thato “DH” Dhladla and creative director Nhlane Enos Manthata said they were excited to work with local talent.
“Everybody benefits. We’re providing jobs; it’s the creative arts but it’s more than that,” Nkoski said.
Manthata said the Monarchy Group would not be cutting any corners. “Bajans will get a chance to be involved creatively. We are not here to just hire persons to carry grip or sand, it’s a proper co-production.
“If your rate is $1000 Bajan a day, we will pay you that and feed you. It will be a job that you can be proud of,” he said.
Dhladla added: “There is a lot of cultural exchange that comes with it, when we are shooting in South Africa; the Bajans from here that we work with will get an opportunity to come to Cape Town as well.”
The team is responsible for producing over five films including Thina Sobabili: The Two of Us which was South Africa’s entry into the Academy Awards and Golden Globes in the Best Foreign Language film category. It was also screened at the Toronto Black Films festival.
Auditions are set to be held at the The Old Spirit Bond Mall on Wharf Road Bridgetown. (TG)
