BARBADIANS HAVE BEEN advised to alert health care providers when prescription drugs are not working the way they should.
Director of the Barbados Drug Service, Maryam Hinds, made the plea at a town hall meeting that dealt with the cost of health care in Barbados at the Ivan Harewood Centre of the Christ Church Parish Church on Tuesday night.
“If you’re using a particular drug and you find that it is not effective, we need you to tell us. We need you to tell us ‘this is what is happening’. Because what we have noticed over the years is that sometimes the patient is diabetic or hypertensive, they go to the doctor and the doctor monitors the patient and realises the blood pressure is not coming down, or the blood pressure is still coming up [and] they just increase the drugs without knowing that the patient has not been taking the medication. So there is a lot of wastage in the system in the sense that people are not adhering,” Hinds said.
She was responding to a comment from a member of the audience, was suggested that inferior drugs were being brought into the country for locals.
