He lives his life on the sea

As part of the Nation Publishing Company’s 50th anniversary of Independence celebrations, the Weekend Nation team is visiting communities across the country that reflect Bajan life. We will talk to people and explore places over the next few editions.

THERE CAN BE no mistaking Ronald Ward when he is out to sea – he’s the man sailing in the national colours.

Ward’s brightly coloured boat, the Patron 2, is an old one as he said he had it for many years, but he said he recently gave it a fresh coat of paint for Barbados’ 50th anniversary – so it was looking like new.

“I had that boat for about 20 years now and it has always been in those colours but I just repainted it a couple months ago. I just like the colours – them is my colours, my country’s colours and that is just the pride,” he said.

The WEEKEND NATION team came across the boat on the beach in Bathsheba, St Joseph. Ward said he had hauled it up as he had overheard a forecast of strong winds and he did not want any rough waters to cause damage to his boat, something that had occurred on a previous occasion.
