AN INTENSIVE CLEANING operation now on at The Lodge School to remove mould from a number of teaching and administrative areas may have averted industrial action by teachers when school resumes in two weeks.

But president of the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union (BSTU) Mary Redman has warned all involved not to inhale just yet.

She said the union wanted to be absolutely sure that the process would eliminate the problem, that the chemicals used by cleaners will not create new health issues, and that steps were being taken to prevent a recurrence.

She told the SUNDAY SUN the union was extremely concerned about the situation, and wanted the Ministry of Education to share with them urgently the findings of an environmental assessment carried out recently, after teachers had to be directed to stay out of the staffroom, and similar issues raised in relation to the principal’s office, the area occupied by secretaries, information technology labs, technical rooms and chemistry labs.(RRM)
