LAST SATURDAY NIGHT was a big one for Harrison College as they welcomed a new Kolij king and queen.

On a night themed Hollywood Walk of Fame, it was only fitting that style, talent, intelligence and elegance won Mikhail Nelson and Shawana Harris the coveted titles.

Just before 10 p.m. when their names were announced it was quite clear that the honours of the night belonged to them. When they first stepped on stage a little more than three hours earlier, they brought much confidence and purpose. All seven contestants were good in their own right, however.

Harris, who characterised herself as a “tiny renaissance lady on a massive mission” was awarded People’s Choice (female), Miss Congeniality, Best Booth Display (female) and Best Talent (female)

Her award-winning dramatic piece, The Conversation, dealt with the taboo and sometimes controversial subject of abortion.

And as Harris battled making a decision, the once rambunctious audience at the Plantation Garden Theatre, St Lawrence, Christ Church was silenced. Ultimately, she decided against an abortion and dashed out of the office when her name was called. It was a conversation that Harris handled very well, to the delight of her cheering squad.

Nelson won Best Talent and though his dramatisation of another serious topic took a more comedic tone, his message was heard as clearly.

“The Brigadier”, as he also called himself, was a no-nonsense man who was highly peeved by individuals and businesses that were destroying the environment by their callous and careless habits. Litterers and dumpers be warned: “He will fine yuh when he find yuh. And Lock yuh up and them can’t find yuh”.

Nelson copped the Cobra Award of Excellence, People’s Choice (male) and Most Improved (male).

Harris’ biggest rival for queen was Reniece Bonnett, the eventual runner-up, and for king initially it appeared to many to be John-Mark Hazzard, but Lijani Cherry ultimately placed second.

Hazzard earned Mr Photogenic, Best Casual Wear, Best Booth Display and Best Formal Wear. Bonnett was Most Improved (female), Miss Photogenic, Best Casual Wear as well as Best Formal Wear.

Other contestants were: Cameron Weekes and Juliana Blackman, who was possibly the most visually stunning on the night in a sleek turquoise gown inspired by American actress Meryl Streep and designed by Lester Welch. (SDB Media)
