IT HAS BEEN reported in a section of the printmedia that the Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy, declared in the House of Assembly “contrary to popular belief, the majority of this island’s roads are in good condition”. The report went on to say that he further estimated over 70 per cent of roads would receive a passing grade.
Because the minister juxtaposed an estimated percentage against a contrary “popular belief”, then for the benefit of other members of the House, and by extension all Barbadian commuters, a more convincing statement should have been made that contained units in kilometres/miles.
If the facts are that 70 per cent of our roads would receive a passing grade, then there would be no reason for other parliamentarians to howl, neither would motorists complain on a daily basis about the condition of our roads, nor would “potholes” be a repeated lyric in a number of Barbadian calypsos.
May I suggest that the minister recheck with his source of information in order to dispel any curiosity or cynicism that may arise from the figures stated by him.
