IN A FEW YEARS, the now dry and desert-like area of Haggatts, St Andrew, will be a grove of fruit trees, thanks to the Barbados Boy Scouts Association.
Scores of scouts from packs across the island and their scout leaders were joined by Girl Guides and their guiders as well as parents on Saturday in planting 735 fruit trees in the Scotland District. Tamarind, mammy and golden apple, breadnut, pomegranate and gooseberry were some of the trees planted.
Chief Commissioner of the Boy Scouts, Dr Nigel Taylor, said it was part of scout activities to mark this year’s World Environment Day. In addition, he said the tree planting was also an initiative from the World Association of Scout Movement which had set a goal of reforesting the world. (HLE)
