A YOUTHFUL Barbados Select XI upstaged a depleted West Indies XI in the first of two practice matches at Kensington Oval on Wednesday evening as the regional side continued preparation for next month’s One-Day International tri-nation series with Australia and South Africa.
Batting first in the day/night encounter, the locals amassed a challenging 290 for eight off 50 overs before limiting West Indies to 240 in 47.1 overs to win by 50 runs.
Test players Shai Hope and Omar Phillips, with knocks of 61 and 58, respectively, and a stylish 44 from Shamarh Brooks were the mainstays of the Select XI’s innings in which all eight batsmen dismissed reached double figures.Â
West Indies ran into early trouble against young left-arm pacer Tarik Shorey (2-33), who removed the opening pair of Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher within six overs of the reply. Charles went lbw, while Fletcher offered the mid-wicket fielder a simple catch. (AH)
