THE COMMEMORATIVE BROKEN TRIDENT made its visit to the St John Primary School this morning.

As the school prepared to display the Trident throughout the school day, principal Ometa Hinds told the students the nation would only celebrate 50 years of Independence once and many of them would not be there in 50 years’ time when 100 years is celebrated.

“I really wish that all pupils will wholeheartedly embrace these celebrations. Treasure the moments and be truly proud to be a Barbadian,” Hinds said.

Also giving remarks was parliamentary representative for St John Mara Thompson, who told the students that in the 50 years since Independence it was good to note the progress that the island had made.

Thompson reminded the students that many years ago education had to be paid for but now it was free. She also urged the children to understand that their opportunities in life depended heavily on them paying attention to the education that is available to them.

The Trident was received by cub scouts Jevoni Smith and Shakio Simpson and brownies Shamya Barker and Janeesha Austin-Trotman. (LK)
