THE BARBADOS CULINARY Team has finished its first day of competition on a high.
Members made sure to mind their peas and cubes as they showcased their versatility and panache in bringing Barbados to Miami for the annual Taste of the Caribbean culinary competition.
With 13 teams in the arena at the Hyatt Regency, the kid gloves were off as the bell rang to signal the start of the best of the best in food and drinks.
Today was only for bartenders in the vodka category and Barbados, in keeping with the 50th anniversary of Independence theme, put pudding and souse in a cocktail. First-time bartender Ryan Adamson was up to the task.
Chef Kirk Ruck was in the individual beef dish category and plantains, lentils and spinach were on his plate.
Michelle Smith-Mayers of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. is in Miami supporting the team along with other officials.
“The team is full of first timers but apart from the nervousness they are raring to go. Those who are not competing are here supporting their teammates and it is always good to see the camaraderie, ” she said.
The team competes tomorrow in the team competition for lunch as well as two bartender competitions and individual pastry. (NS)
