Stemming tide of drugs at sea

THE BARBADOS Coast Guard has been working to plug the leaks in the island’s borders.

For the period January to May 2016, they have intercepted eight vessels attempting to smuggle contraband into the island.

Lieutenant Commander Mark Peterson, acting commanding officer of the Coast Guard, sat down with the SUNDAY SUN in an interview, and spoke of the efforts they have employed in the unrelenting fight against illegal drugs, and the hard work staff are putting in to protect the island’s wide-open borders.

“For the first five months of this year, law enforcement entities have intercepted a total of eight vessels and arrested 16 people. The total quantity of vegetable matter seized was 5 622.8 pounds and 121 kilograms of a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine,” he said.
