BARBADIAN Orlando Husbands scored two wins in his first three games at the Pan American Under-20 Chess Championships in Colombia.

FIDE master Husbands, a double CARIFTA Under-20 gold medallist, defeated Colombians Jose Echeverry and Parra Olarte in his first and third round games, respectively, but lost to international master Guillermo Vasquez of Paraguay in the second round.

After three of nine rounds, Husbands was in 18th place in the 56-man field that includes 11 international masters, 11 FIDE masters and one candidate master.

The fourth and fifth rounds of games were scheduled for yesterday.

A member of UWI Blackbirds, Husbands’ trip to Colombia was made possible with the assistance of a development grant from FIDE as one of the top three rated juniors from development levels 3-5 among federations in the Americas. (HG)
