THERE HAS BEEN an adjustment to the temporary crossing in The City near the Chamberlain Bridge.
Last week yellow plastic units were installed on Wharf Road to accommodate pedestrians while the Barbados Port Inc. carried out refurbishment to the nearby Wickham/Lewis Boardwalk.
But the temporary safe zone for pedestrians created something of a controversy, including a dispute about whether there were speed humps or not that led to some congestion in Bridgetown.
Over the weekend, port officials moved in, erecting proper signage to alert motorists they were approaching the safety units.
The units were laid between last Tuesday night and Wednesday morning to allow pedestrians to safely cross at the northern end of the Chamberlain Bridge, during the closure of the Wickham/Lewis Boardwalk for refurbishment over the next “six to eight weeks”.
Maurice Gaskin, assistant manager, maintenance, with the port agency warned approaching motorists and pedestrians to pay attention to the signs and units. He explained that the units were being raised because motorists could not see them on approach.
Gaskin appealed to motorists to be patient and pedestrians to cross at the designated area.
The adjustment now includes flashing lights. (AC/RA)
