Sealy: UK still main visitor source

THE UNITED KINGDOM (UK) will remain Barbados’ largest source market for tourism, Brexit or no Brexit.

This was Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy’s position yesterday to questions raised about the implications for Barbados’ tourism as a result of the British vote to exit the European Union.

“The UK is our largest source market. That is the case now, it was the case last week and this will be the case next week, whether they are a part of the European Union or not,” he told the media on the sidelines of a tour of Wyndham Sam Lord’s Castle where demolition work began.

The Brexit vote was one of the things over which people in the local tourism sector had expressed concern, wondering how it would affect this year’s tourism performance. The upcoming Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, next month was seen as another possible obstacle to high visitor arrivals in 2016. (GC)
