GOVERNMENT’S INITIAL ATTEMPT to fingerprint Barbadians travellers has been shot down by the court.
Today Justice Pamela Beckles ruled that the Immigration Biometric Regulation 2015 was null and void and unconstitutional. She made an order for the legislation to be quashed.
At the end of the in chamber matter, activist and attorney David Comissiong, in whose name the lawsuit was brought said the case showed Barbadians they can challenge the Government.
He was represented by Edmund Hinkson in association with Senator Wilfred Abrahams and Lalu Hanoman in the action challenging the procedure to fingerprint all travellers including citizens as part of a security measure.
Commisiong said he brought the case as a citizen of Barbados and reminded Barbadians that they too can challenge the government.
Crown Counsel Jared Richards in the Solicitor General’s Office appeared in the matter in which Freundel Stuart, Minister responsible for Immigration; Adriel Braithwaite Attorney General and Wayne Marshall, Chief Immigration Officer were the defendants. (TKS)
