THE CASH-STRAPPED Transport Board is indebted to this country’s National Insurance Scheme (NIS) to the tune of almost $32 million.
The statutory institution’s indebtedness dates back as far as 2010, but the NIS has registered three claims with the Transport entity for 2016, twice in April, and once last month.
Its indebtedness to the NIS is three times more than that of the National Housing Corporation (NHC) or the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).
The legal action, which consists of a number of judgments made in the Supreme Court of Barbados, is related to the board’s delinquency in making national insurance contributions over the last six years, as required by law.
In total, the Transport Board actually owes the NIS $31 176 702. That figure is based on claims entered by the NIS.
