The school, which officially opened its doors to staff and students on April 19, 1978, was at the centre of a national health and environmental controversy and was subsequently closed after serious health concerns prompted an environmental assessment at the school in 2005.
That year, there were numerous complaints from staff and students following a kerosene spill at the adjacent Tropical Laundries compound in Country Road, St Michael.
On January 18 that year alone, 22 teachers at the school were absent, four of whom had been on certified sick leave before; while two days after, 12 were absent, including the four on certified sick leave. (CM)
