Akela’s quest

AKELA JONES’ moment is here and now.

The versatile 21-year-old Barbadian athlete begins her quest for Olympic glory today.

It’s the first day of track and field competition in Rio and the fast-improving Jones gets into action from 8:35 a.m. with the start of the women’s heptathlon when she lines up for the 100 metres hurdles.

Jones, the 2015 NCAA heptathlon champion, has made immense strides in the event over the past two years, prompting optimism that she can deliver the island’s first Olympic medal since Obadele Thompson won bronze 16 years ago in Sydney.

As Jones fine-tuned her preparations yesterday, chef de mission of the Barbados contingent, Dr Adrian Lorde, said the camp was upbeat. (HG)
