Akela misses high jump final

IT JUST WASN’T TO BE.

Not this time for Akela Jones, at least.

Barbados’ collective hopes turned into a heap of heartache yesterday morning after the darling of local track and field agonisingly crashed out of the women’s high jump at the Rio Olympics.

Standing as the country’s last chance at a medal in these Games, Akela failed to advance to tomorrow’s final when she couldn’t clear 1.89 metres – well off her outdoor best of 1.95 set in April this year.

Visibly speaking to herself before every jump, the 21-year-old knocked down the bar on her first two attempts at the height before losing her footing and running right under the bar into the crash mat on what should have been her final try. (JM)
