NOT FOR THE FIRST TIME, Bikini fitness and the men’s physique proved to be the cornerstone of the National Bodybuilding And Fitness Championships.
The face of the sport has changed. Shakira Doughlin, Melissa Burrowes, Hadley Hoyte and Ryan Haynes, are the ones who are wowing the fans. Doughlin and Burrowes with grace, poise and skin tone, while Hoyte and Haynes are bringing rock-hard abdominals and showmanship to the men’s physique competition.
Bodybuilding, which was once the heart and soul of the programme, has been reduced to a sideshow with paltry and mediocre fields.
Young guns like Shaquille Lavine and Lamarr Coward are keeping the sport alive, but bodybuilding needs at least a dozen more of them before it can return to the top of the ladder as the main drawing card.
