BARBADOS will be sending its youngest ever team to represent the island at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan.

President of the Barbados Chess Federation Allan Herbert told MIDWEEK SPORT the team selected speaks to the future of chess on the island.

“For us, it’s the beginning of a new era within local chess. It’s probably the youngest team we have ever sent, both for the men’s and women’s,” he said.

“It really represents the turning of a new page for us because we expect the core of these teams to be the base upon which we go forward in the next few Olympiads.”

The Olympiad is set to take place in Azerbaijan’s capital city, Baku, from Friday until September 14. (RG)
