MAVIS BECKLES: Problems dat need fixing now

WELL BOY THE dreaded Sargassum sea moss is back again and it got some beaches, especially the ones pon the east coast miserable a’ready.

I waiting tuh see how duh gine deal wid it this time around ‘cause since the last time it was here, a whole lot o’ people from the places dat does do the beach cleaning, get send home, and I know dat this tine around duh ain’t gine got dat amount o’ man power.

It was a big-time problem the last time it was here and as a last resort duh eventually had tuh use some heavy duty equipment tuh move it from some o’ the beaches dat was real bad.

I hope the people who does deal wid the beaches remember dat the tourist season gine soon be here and duh doan wait ‘til the people start coming in tuh playing dem now bong-ing gine tuh do something bout it.

Ya know we! Nuh matter what it is, we does wait ‘til the horse done bolt outta the stable tuh play we gine shutting the door. We like tuh do things last minute and we like tuh look at the problems and talk nuff nuff big talk, but very little action does happen.

I also hope dat duh make haste and get rid o’ some o’ the garbage from all ovah the place, ‘cause lemmuh tell ya, it is a real eye sore; it really doan look good at all. It seems like wherevah ya look nowadays, all ya does see is piles and piles o’ garbage just sitting there long-side the road. Some disgusting people ain’t making it nuh easier neither; duh does fling it there like it doan matter tuh dem nor it doan bother dem.

THE NATION newspaper has been going around highlighting places dat got all kinds o’ build up of garbage. When ya see the mounds o’ garbage, it does look as if the Sanitation people does forget some o’ these neighbourhoods, while some others does get duh garbage pick up evah single week.

But dem is only the neighbourhoods; dah ain’t got nothing tuh do wid the beaches and some o’ the picnic spots dat full o’ garbage. We always talking bout how proud we are bout we Barbados but when ya see the things people does do, ya does have tuh ask . . . where’s the pride?

It is disgusting when people get together wid duh friends and family tuh eat drink and enjoy demselves pon the beaches and when duh done, leave all the empty containers bout the place fuh the rats, mice, cockroaches and flies tuh have a field day. I think dat Bajans should be shame tuh do these sort o’ things. We gotta remember dat weain’t doing it tuh nuhbody else, we doing it tuh weselves.

Of course ya could see dat the garbage bins pon the beach too small tuh hold in all o’ dem food containers, glasses, bottles and whatevah else but come on man, you gine tell me dat somebody in the group cahn think bout bringing ‘long a couple o’ large garbage bags tuh put all o’ dah stuff in when duh finish? Ya mean tuh tell me dat evahbody in the group got the same doan-care-ish attitude?

This is we country and evahbody gotta make an effort tuh keep this lil place clean otherwise we gine got some kind o’ epidemic break-out bout here and Peter gine pay fuh Paul. We gotta start being serious bout this garbage problem before it get outta hand.
