BARBADOS were outclassed at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan yesterday but top local player Orlando Husbands had the satisfaction of achieving a draw against a grandmaster.

On another tough day for the Bajans in the third round of games, the men, ranked No. 103rd out of 180 teams, lost 3-1/2 to 1/2 to 45th ranked Australia, while the women, ranked at 119 out of 140 teams, suffered a 4-0 defeat against 108th ranked Hong Kong.

The only Barbadian to escape defeat was Husbands, the island’s highest ranked player with a rating of 2257. Playing on board 1, Husbands battled to a draw against grandmaster Zong-Yuan Zhao, who has a rating of 2550. (HG)
