The health warning came from environmental scientist Dr Ariana Marshall, who said two of the chemicals used in the process, diesel and malathion, had been banned in other countries.
She suggested that health officials consider alternatives like water-based fogging or aquaculture that used fish to consume mosquito larvae.
The Ministry of Health responded to the concern via a press release which dismissed the idea that malathion (a pesticide) and diesel posed health risks. The release said that malathion was “the most effective agent that can be used to kill adult mosquitoes”.
