Teen sex for pay on the increase

THE NUMBER OF young teenage girls having transactional sex with older men is on the increase.

And many, said the executive director of the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA), Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, did not know their HIV status.

In addition, there has been a steady increase in the number of reported cases of child abuse. In many of those cases, the abuser was known to the child.

Bynoe-Sutherland made the disclosure as she addressed the second Women’s Health Medical Conference at the 3Ws Oval of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies yesterday.

Bynoe-Sutherland told her audience that some families were benefiting financially from “turning a blind eye to relationships between young girls and older men”.
