OAS facing a money ‘crisis’

THE ORGANISATION OF American States (OAS) is in the midst of a financial crisis.

That admission came yesterday from Assistant General Secretary Nester Mendez, during a lecture at the Moot Court Room of the law faculty at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.

Mendez apportioned part of the blame to some member countries not paying, while others contribute only what they have to. While there is enough in the till to “keep the work going on”, Mendez said the balance is not enough.

“You cannot plan your work and depend that people will make on time contributions, specific contributions and that you will not know where the next $100 000 is coming from. We need to put a system or a structure to reach our resources,” he stated. (YB)
