MAVIS BECKLES: Help doan mean ownership

I WANT TUH KNOW SOMETHING. What does get in tuh some good girls tuh make dem think dat dem should or could tame bad boys? This is something dat I always wonder bout.

Ya does see it all the time, I ain’t telling you nuh lie. When I come across stories like dat I does hear myself saying, ‘not again’ because I cahn understand what does make some women believe that dem know how tuh get somebody back pon duh feet, or dat duh could make somebody in tuh something dat duh ain’t, or even change duh outlook pon life.

Whatevah it is, it doan evah work out fuh the woman in the long run.

I ain’t nuh big movie person but I like tuh read, anything from books tuh the newspaper and magazines, and evah suh often ya does come across a story bout a successful woman who would tell you bout how she meet this man who was having a hard time, he was down pon he luck; how he wasn’t working at the time but he was very nice.

The story would go on tuh tell you how the two o’ dem developed a good friendship and she would introduce him tuh certain people who he would work for from time tuh time. Next thing ya would read dat she start tuh buy him a few nice things and take him tuh one or two functions. All this time the man would be the perfect gentleman and she would be feeling evah suh good dat she was able tuh turn this man life around and make him in tuh something respectable.

A couple years would pass and every thing would be looking fine when all of a sudden she realise dat the man ain’t getting on like he used tuh before, dat she ain’t the best thing since slice bread; he like he gone back tuh he old ways only thing he look more refine. So now he start staying away and when she ask, he want tuh know if she want tuh control he life.

But the thing is, she feel dat he owe her fuh pulling he out o’ the rut dat he was in and he pon the other hand, ain’t want nuhbody tuh control he. He might even got he eye pon somebody else. Doan talk bout if she lil older than he at all, it worst.

But this sort o’ thing doan only happen wid well tuh do women alone, it does happen at all levels. I does hear some o’ dem talking and lambasting the men bout the things dat dem do fuh dem and where dem pick dem up from and wha’ duh had from wha’ duh ain’t had, and now duh turn out tuh be dogs. Some o’ we women like we got the notion dat we there tuh rescue men in distress, not realising dat we ain’t responsible fuh dem.

The same kinda thing does happen tuh men too. Some o’ dem does even be married and got a family but would meet a nice young woman who might be struggling tuh make it. Next thing he might help her get a lil apartment and set her up. Now duh get close and she might now feel obligated tuh him fuh the help and thing. All of a sudden he would take it dat he is in control and he should be able tuh come and go at the place he help her get, as he like.

Next thing she start working at a better job and making friends, she might even find she self attracted tuh somebody around her own age and even though he got he wife and family, he still want tuh be in control. He think dat he is the body who got she where she is and she owe him, so he cahn leggo.

All o’ this lot o’ foolishness so got the world in all sorts o’ trouble. Ya see, a lot o’ people got the notion dat they have all the answers and dem should control somebody else life and when the body decide dat dem cahn handle it, it is bare confusion.
