INCREASING NUMBERS of Barbadians are taking to the high seas as they search for employment on cruise liners.
Following a job recruitment drive held at Mall 34, Bridgetown, yesterday, chief executive officer and founder of Trinity Recruitment Services, Judeen Scantlebury, told the DAILY NATION: “Right now we get a large number of applications coming in at around 50 or more.”
“Due to what is happening across Barbados and the neighbouring islands in terms of unemployment, we find that a lot of people are applying to the agency for employment. We have people here from St Lucia, people from St Vincent and also Grenada, Jamaica and Guyana.”
She said there were 47 job hopefuls this time around, and given their pre-screening and training by Trinity Recruitment Services, most of them would be selected by Apollo Ship Chandlers to work on Thomson Cruises around the world.
In addition to this, Scantleberry said her company was embarking on a new venture with Carnival Corporation which would allow them to recruit staff for cruise ships under the Carnival brand.
Director of Shipboard Human Resources for Apollo Ship Chandlers, Othmar Hehli, said the jobs would fall within the entry level range.
“In certain countries we can hire a little higher positions, particularly Asia where they have a lot of 5 Star hotels. Unfortunately here in Barbados some of the hotels you have are average and the technical proficiency training you have isn’t that good,” he added. (AD)
