Rights of child come first, says ex-judge

THE COURT REMAINS the fairest place to settle custody battles, said retired Justice of Appeal Sherman Moore yesterday. He also dismissed the notion that the system favoured women in those matters.

Rather, he said, the court gave priority to the rights of the child at the root of the dispute.

“The court is concerned only with the welfare of the child. Before the court makes any decision affecting the custody, care and control of a minor, it must order and consider reports from the Child Care Board and/or the Family Services Division of the Welfare Department, psychologists, psychiatrists where necessary and other medical reports concerning the physical health of the child,” he said.

Moore was the featured speaker at the Men’s Educational Support Association’s (MESA) annual family luncheon and awards ceremony, attended by members of other non-governmental groups, at Sunbury Plantation House, St Philip, yesterday. (TG)
