‘Intervention needed’ before further downgrades

UNLESS THERE IS an “intervention”, economist Ryan Straughn fears that Barbados’ credit rating will continue to decline.

He said the recent downgrade of Barbados by Standard & Poor’s from ‘B’ to ‘B-’ would cause international investors to be less confident in the country.

“Essentially there is not much further to go before the market perceives the Government of Barbados is likely to default, [and] the reality is that the lower you get on the totem pole, the less confident businesses will be and the less confident investors can be; and these are circumstances we are dealing with,” he said.

Straughn, who is also the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) candidate in Christ Church East Central for the next general election, was speaking at the Deighton Griffith Secondary School on Sunday at his constituency branch meeting. (TSG)
