Warm welcome for boat crew

TWENTY PEOPLE, 11 months, 44 000 nautical miles, 12 boats and eight legs.

That is how many people it took, and how long it took for them to complete the tenth Clipper Round The World Yacht Race aboard a 70-foot Volvo race boat named Visit Seattle.

The crew, captained by two-time around-the-worlder Matthew Mitchell, comprised 20 people from 16 nationalities, including Barbadian Michael “Tino” Jones. They spoke 19 different languages.

“Sailing is not for the faint at heart, and so it has proved. Despite the tough conditions we pushed through to the end. We had various jobs on the boat and we all worked to the best of our ability, in spite of the cramped conditions on board. (RA)
