FSC head: Insurance sector should review definitions

INSURANCE COMPANIES may have to re-examine the definitions of personal injury in the policies they are selling, the chief executive officer of the Financial Services Commission, Randy Graham, has said.

He spoke to the SUNDAY SUN about the dichotomy between insurance companies and the National Insurance Scheme, when it comes to deciding if workers are disabled or medically unfit to work.

“The insurance companies determine the likelihood an employee would become disabled or medically unfit and then charge a premium,” Graham explained. “The insurance company has various definitions on their policy for what is medically unfit or disabled that range from loss of a limb, loss of an eye, loss of essential body parts . . . .
