SOME WORKERS are using illness as an escape route to get out of jobs they do not like, an insurance executive has said.
And insurance companies are forking out sometimes up to a million dollars to pay the workers for the rest of their “working lives”, even though they’re not on the job.
The insurance official said the claims were taking a toll on the industry and as a result they were challenging the reports of the National Insurance Scheme in assessing some people as being disabled or medically unfit to work.
“Some insurance companies have set up their own medical tribunal to get a second opinion,” the executive said.
He charged that some workers were treating the payout as a lottery win. (MB)
