HOME-SCHOOLING is a democratic right that should not be denied any parent in Barbados, no matter the religious persuasion.
Advancing this argument yesterday, University of the West Indies Cave Hill political science lecturer Dr Tennyson Joseph told a sitting of the Barbados Senior Parliament that the current debate on home-schooling went to the core of Barbados’ democracy.
He spoke against the background of the case involving two Barbadian Rastafarian parents who were last month found guilty of failing to register their children in the school system, in breach of the Education Act.
In a letter submitted as evidence in that case, the father had indicated to the Ministry of Education that he and his partner had refused to allow their son and daughter to attend school, because of subjects in the curriculum he said were against the teachings of the family’s religious faith, among other reasons.
