KARATE IS NOT just about self-defence, it is a way of life and striving to be a better person each day.
This is the message chairman and chief instructor of the International Shotokan Federation of Jamaica, Sensei Garry Turnball, wants to send out.
“I have been practising hard since 1968 and loving it still. It keeps me feeling young. I started karate at the then College of Arts, Science and Technology, now called the University of Technology. At the time we had a student there who knew some karate, so we used to just jump in and train with him. That went on until I left to pursue my studies at the University of the West Indies, where I was formally introduced to Shotokan Karate with the Japan Karate Association,” he said.
