SPORTS TOURISM will receive a boost over the next two months with the staging of the Barbados 50 Transatlantic Rally Event.
A total of 55 boats departed England to arrive in the island as part of the 50th Independence anniversary celebrations and many of the sailors and family members are expected to remain in Barbados until January 2017. Four boats have already arrived in the island.
Sports manager of the BTMI, Devon Chase, told a press briefing at the Barbados Yacht Club yesterday that the rally was a continuation of the work of his organisation and the Yacht Club in building out the sailing legacies of Barbados.
One of the most read writers on sailing, Jimmy Cornell, who arrived and fell in love with Barbados 40 years ago, pointed out that it was easy to get the sailors to take part in the event at this time in Barbados’ history. (RG)
