WITH THE COUNTRY’S two main political parties sharply divided on the issue of privatisation, they are now getting advice from a former leader.
Brushing aside the divisiveness over the issue and stating that both political parties have embraced aspects of it in the past, Owen Arthur said he is all for a carefully conceived and managed programme of privatisation of enterprises owned and operated by the state, estimated at 60.
And as he delivered his Towards a New Governance lecture Wednesday night, he suggested that any such changeover should have employee shareholder options.
“There might be nothing which can conduce more to the enhanced productivity that is needed to spur growth than for persons engaged in commercial enterprises owned by the state to go to work and give of their best in the expectation of being able to earn a dividend as well as a wage,” he said.
