BARBADOS NEEDS A national drive to reduce plastic bag use, says environmental advocates.
In light of its ongoing threats to the environment, general manager of the National Conservation Commission (NCC) Keith Neblett, and director of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, Julia Horrocks, said it was time to untangle the issues linked to its dependence.
The Future Centre Trust is behind an environmental campaign in which local businesses like supermarkets and other retail outlets will charge customers 20 cents for plastic bags starting May 1. The public relations officer of the Trust, Kammie Holder, said he anticipated an 80 per cent reduction in use after the charge is introduced.
Neblett called for the creation of a programme to help the public loosen their tight grip on plastic bags.
