School doors reopen today

THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN return to the classroom today after authorities shut down schools for a day following islandwide flooding on Tuesday.

The schools were closed the next day because of the Independence Day holiday but the Ministry of Education extended the absence to include yesterday to assess conditions.

At Frederick Smith Secondary School there was water damage to its main hall. During a WEEKEND NATION visit to the Trents, St James school there was evidence of the flooded auditorium’s floor.

Ancillary supervisor of the school, Simeon Nicholls, said that the main reason for the damage was the underground pipes that the school is built upon. (MR)
