PARTICIPANTS of the Barbados 50 Transatlantic Rally had the opportunity to experience Barbadian culture at its best during the culmination of the island’s 50th anniversary Independence celebrations last week.
In a small ceremony at the Barbados Yacht Club last Thursday to honour the participants who are currently in Barbados, coordinator of the event, Jimmy Cornell, explained that the award ceremony was mainly to honour the children who had had a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“I have been organising transatlantic around the world events for over 30 years. All the events which are family oriented involve children, and very often the biggest achievement in crossing the ocean is not that of the parents, but that of the children.
“They become very much aware of the immensity of the ocean because they do not realise that there is more water than land on the planet. The journey to Barbados would have been eight hours on a plane, compared to 21 days on a yacht. So I decided that the children should be recognised as young argonauts having accomplished crossing the Atlantic Ocean,” he said. (RA)
