MORE CHILDREN and adolescents in Barbados are seeking psychological services, a health official has said.

While he did not have the supporting figures, acting director of the Psychiatric Hospital, David Leacock, said the possible increase is related to the decentralisation of such services to polyclinics.

“You would hear things in the media from time to time as far as schoolchildren being challenged and how they deal with conflict and other issues as far as interpersonal relationships are concerned,” he said.

“Those kinds of things would lead those persons to seek our services here at the hospital . . . . What we’ve seen is because some persons might have been challenged in coming to us to seek help they’re more willing to go to the polyclinic to get that help.” (YB)
